Founded in 1975, The Vietnamese Association of Illinois (VAI) is a state-wide organization serving thousands of diverse ethnic refugee and immigrant communities in Chicagoland and DuPage County. Our primary mission is to foster unity and solidarity among Vietnamese people in Illinois, while building community empowerment within all communities we serve. Our programs include senior homecare, family resettlement and citizenship assistance, civic engagement, youth programming, adult education and mutual aid. 

The Development Associate will work with the Development Manager to further the strategic priorities of the organization, specifically in the area of community and donor engagement.  

Responsibilities:

• Communicate the organization’s mission and vision with funders and community members;

• Research prospective donors and prepare donor profiles to support in fundraising campaigns; 

• Assist in planning and coordinating individual giving campaigns;

• Gather information on service metrics and client stories to cultivate VAI narrative;

• Prepare reports and analyze progress toward annual goals; 

Community Engagement

• Recruit, train, and engage volunteers in community development events, including MidAutumn Festival, Lunar New Year, and Argyle Night Markets;  

  • Assist in planning and coordinating community and special events;

• Establish and maintain relationships with stakeholders, such as vendors, local organizations, community leaders, and public officials;  

Development Operations

• Manage donor database project, including researching databases, and working with consultants to operationalize donor database;

  • Creating development document templates, including funder meeting agendas and sitevisit scripts, event sponsorship packages, warm/cold outreach emails, and other documents as needed.

Qualifications:

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in nonprofit or community-based organizations; 

• Excellent writing and communication skills;

• Excellent analytical, organizational, problem-solving and project management skills;

• Ability to work well with diverse groups of people;

• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with accuracy, attention to detail, and confidentiality;

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite • Experience with client-relations or donor management systems (such as Salesforce or Raiser’s Edge);

• Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Work Requirements:

This is a full-time position based at VAI’s office in the Uptown neighborhood, one of Chicago’s most diverse neighborhoods along the lakefront on the northside. VAI operates on a 4-day work week with an expected minimum of 32-hours of work a week. VAI staff must work at least two days in-office at our Chicago location. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.

Job Type: Full-time salaried position with benefits package. Salary range: $55,000 – $60,000.
